Joshua Bell, Menahem Pressler among artists to perform at Jacobs School’s ‘Summer Music’ series
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — As part of the inaugural Indiana University Summer Festival of the Arts, the Jacobs School of Music has assembled a “Summer Music” series of more than 40 free and ticketed events from June 20 through Aug. 10. In all, the series offers an array of world-class concerts featuring orchestra, chamber music, piano, band, percussion, opera, chorus and other special events.
Jacobs School faculty and guest to perform complete Beethoven works for cello and piano
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana University Jacobs School of Music visiting assistant professor and collaborative pianist Liang-yu Wang will join Belgian guest cellist Thomas Landschoot in two concerts to present Beethoven’s complete works for cello and piano, including five sonatas and three variations. The concerts will take place Nov. 5 and 6 at 4 p.m. in Auer Hall.
The five sonatas, categorized in three different opus numbers–5, 69 and 102–were written at different stages of Beethoven’s life, illustrating the stylistic changes of his early, middle and late works. Read more

STARKER IN HIS OWN WORDS: Indiana University Distinguished Professor of Music Janos Starker is universally acknowledged as one of the world’s greatest musicians. The Hungarian-born cellist arguably is also the premier teacher of his instrument. But Starker’s famed expressiveness isn’t limited to the stage and the studio. In his new memoir, The World of Music According to Starker, which was released Monday (Oct. 18) by Indiana University Press, the Grammy award-winning musician offers a witty, wry and colorful commentary on the music world. Starker takes the reader on a tour of life as an internationally famous musician who has spent as much time in the trenches (orchestra pits, recording studios and teaching studios) as he has in the limelight. “The wide variety of my experiences allowed me to view the music world from a somewhat different angle than what the starry-eyed youth envisions,” Starker said. Beaux Arts Trio plays on as a hallmark of chamber music mastery and innovation
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — It was supposed to last nine days and one recording for MGM.
Just a musical mixing experiment featuring three instruments — the cello, piano and violin — that many musicians thought were largely incompatible. Bring them together and the balance would be all wrong, they argued. A trio with those instruments couldn’t possibly be a viable chamber music ensemble, some scoffed.
Menahem Pressler receives France’s highest cultural honor
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Menahem Pressler, a distinguished professor in the Indiana University School of Music, was presented with the Commandeur in the Order of Arts and Letters award, France’s highest cultural honor, by French Counsul General Richard Barbeyron in a special ceremony Saturday evening (Sept. 17).
Beaux Arts Trio documentary to play nationwide
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — An Indiana University-produced documentary celebrating the legendary Beaux Arts Trio and IU Distinguished Professor of Music Menahem Pressler will air nationwide on PBS this Monday (Oct. 23).
IU Jacobs School of Music scores at Grammys
The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music intended to make some noise at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards on February 11, and make some noise it did. At least five Jacobs alumni and one former faculty member brought home the coveted golden gramophone on “music’s biggest night.”
